Project Title: Columbarium Inspired by Lives Well-Lived
Company: Dodds Memorials
Designer: Neil Fogarty

Some memorials honor a life. Others honor a love story. This walk-in columbarium completed in August 2024 is one such tribute—an architectural embodiment of a couple’s lifelong journey together. Crafted from Black Mist Granite sourced from Rock of Ages, and finished with a blend of steeled and polished surfaces.

The journey began when a woman approached us with a unique request—to design and purchase a columbarium as a surprise birthday gift for her spouse. The couple had no children, but they shared a lifetime of travel, art, and aesthetic appreciation. During a visit to their home, the designer absorbed the many visual and emotional elements that defined their life together—from wrought iron filigree and lion’s heads on the patio to classical pilasters and a golden monogram inside.

The columbarium, measuring 9’-0” x 10’-9” x 11’-4”, weaves together interior and exterior inspiration. The structure is clad in Black Mist granite with a mix of polished and steeled finishes. The front patio, pilasters, and crown molding are all done in steeled granite, harmonizing beautifully with polished accents.

One of the greatest challenges in the project was sourcing large enough stone for the roof and floor, which exceeded the typical usable block size for the quarry. After nearly two years of searching, it seemed the team might have to compromise the design or change materials altogether. It was only thanks to the perseverance of Rock of Ages’ quarrying division—especially Rob Boulanger—that a clean block was finally secured.

This columbarium stands as a masterclass in patience. Each challenge along the way presented an opportunity to remain true to the original vision. In the end, the decision to wait for the right granite, rather than compromise on quality or design, paid off with a monument that is both functional and profound.
